Does God Exist?
From our beginning, theologians and atheists have argued amongst each other in an effort to prove or disprove the question of God’s existence in an attempt to find answers to our own existence. Not only that, but they search for the answer to where will we be when we die, or, do we even ‘die’ at all. I will present here arguments supporting my conviction for the existence of a Supreme Being, the God of Creation. In my belief system, I think there is irrefutable proof that there is a Supreme Being that created all that is in and out of the spatial aspect of this universe. It’s also my firm belief that He is a loving, and as described in Old Testament writings, a vengeful God.
I will start with God’s properties, what they are, and why they are necessary for His existence. When arguing for the existence for God, we must first define who God is, or more specifically, his attributes and properties. The universal properties of God is that He is perfect, omnipotent, eternal (due to His perfection) and, never changing.
One question that came to me regarding God’s perfection: is perfection necessary for creation? For something to be created as the Universe was, does that creator need to be perfect? We know that humans are far from perfect, but we create things all the time, don’t we? But as we look closer, we must ask, are we creating, or are we discovering what was already in existence? We didn’t ‘create’ florescent lights; we merely discovered its existence. So with deductive reasoning, we might come to the conclusion that we as humans cannot ‘create’ as God creates and since God is perfection, and He created all, we have to assume that perfection is necessary for all creation. But the atheistic belief is that the universe was created from matter, where its essence was imperfect and that imperfection caused a gigantic explosion to create what we have today. Their supposition that we were created from imperfection, I strongly believe to be impossible. As I stated, it is necessary for the creation of anything, whatever or whoever it may be, to be perfect. Even when he created humans His perfection was shown in how He created us. I believe that, for a being to be perfect, it has to both love and show love. Why? Well, take the opposite of love: hate. Can a perfect Being hate and still be perfect? Hate is destructive, and perfection cannot be: its essence is anything but destructive. So if that Being isn’t hate, it must be love. What other options are there? For God to create us, He must love us with perfection. That is why He gave us freewill. Some may ask why didn’t God just create us perfect too? That would be impossible. It is impossible for two exact things to exist at the same time. Since perfection is perfection, then, it cannot exist twice. And since God is eternal, He is the only perfection that has and ever will be in existence. So God giving humans perfection is impossible; He gave us freewill so that we would not be robots. Imagine, if we weren’t able to sin, where would the value in our existence lie? We would be no different than a tree or the air that we breathe. His perfect love allows for us to choose.
God’s omnipotence’s goes hand-in-hand with His perfection. It isn’t just referring to His strength, but also His will to have done whatever He wishes; whatever ‘His’ will may be. Atheists and Christians alike sometimes mistake this for God being able to do whatever is conceivable, but what God can do and whether He will do it is often confused by believers and non-believers alike. God is fundamentally God; He states this in the Bible when he tells Moses to tell the Israelites to call Him, “I Am”. The essential characteristic of God’s being is that God is omnipotent. To challenge God’s omnipotent nature is the philosophical question: Can God make a rock so big that even God can’t move it? This is flawed in questioning; it is a trick question. If you answer, “yes, God can make such a rock” then you’re going to have to explain why God’s inability to move the rock doesn’t constitute a lack of omnipotence. But if you say “no, God can’t make a rock so big that even God can’t move it,” then you’re again forced into explaining why God’s inability to make such a rock doesn’t constitute a lack of omnipotence. But as we can see, this is asking God to work contradictory nonsense. They demand that God produce or do something, which violates the very nature of things. And that is contradictory of His perfection. This is the same as asking Him to create a round triangle, it is impossible to create because once the triangle is round, it ceases to be a triangle.
God is everlasting; this is said in the Bible over and over again. The importance is that if He had a beginning, how could He be perfect? Perfection is just there, it cannot be created, and for God to be created, then that would mean perfection could as well. This applies as well for whether there is an end to God. If God had an end, so would His perfection, and if perfection can possibly end, then it never existed to begin with.
Now someone may ask, “Don’t we ‘create’ a human when we procreate?” I don’t believe that we are creating; we are merely taking what already is inexistence and we are reproducing, not creating. The two terms may sound synonymous; I believe they aren’t. Whether you are an evolutionist or creationist, we all can agree that we came from the ground. So, where I stand, God created not only that ground, but also the formation of Man (Adam) from that and afterwards, Woman from the Man. This is along the same lines as the old joke: Some scientists go to God and tell Him that we (man) don’t need Him anymore because we have figured out a way to make man without Him, so God says: “Let’s have a contest.” All the scientists agree, and they obtain some dirt and God stops them and tells them, “No, no, you have to get your own dirt.” This is a whimsical example that, without what was created by God, reproduction wouldn’t exist.
As for the beginning of the universe, it is imperative that the universe has a beginning. Without a beginning, we could have not reached this point; without a beginning, time could not be possible. The beginning of the universe is the beginning of time itself; thus, since time has a beginning, it had to be created. Since something cannot be created out of nothing, this suggests a Supreme Being (God) having created all. I hold that for something to come into affect, there has to be a cause or reason for it. The cause: God. The reason: God’s Love.
Another argument that the atheist will use is “why does God allow bad things to happen?” You could look further and say that, if there are bad things, then why does God allow life to exist at all? Bad things are going to happen, either from unknown circumstances or from evil people. God allows for these things to happen for His own reasons. One is that He loves us all so much that He perpetuates our loving existence. However, He also does help us. Our nation’s history has faced the world’s greatest evil and we stood them down: this demonstrates evidence of God’s love for our nation. But to understand why God allows bad things to happen we must look at why they exist. The reason bad things exist is due to sin; if you are an atheist you would say that sin is just a made up word from the Bible. However, without the concept of sin, there would be no concept of right or wrong. Without that, we could do whatever we wanted to do. Since some of us perceive ourselves as having morals, the concept of morals has to come from somewhere. So, bad things happen due to sin in the world, but God allowed sin to exist because since we were the ones doing the sinning and God loves us so much, He allowed for us to continue to exist. Take one of the greatest evils that we can remember, Adolf Hitler, and his indescribable atrocities to mankind. God still loved Him, though history doesn’t give record of Hitler loving God, yet, God allowed Hitler to exist and carry out his inhumane atrocities and though many died, some good came out of it. This brings me to my second point: good can come out of the bad that only happens with God’s allowance. If Hitler had not gone to War and did what he did, we might not be the nation that we are today. A chain reaction of events occurred to produce the great nation that we are today; without World War II, we would have never came out of the Great Depression of the Thirties, our nation would have never built the great Army we have, and our entrepreneurs and inventors would never have been the cause of all the things that have been that makes us great. I’m not saying that the suffering of the Jews is worth our nation’s profit! Hitler was going to do what he did; only God could bless someone through it: many people learned what can result from being passive and Israel, especially, says,”NEVER AGAIN!” and many nations are on an alert that might have been otherwise lacking, with possible consequences too horrible for contemplation on an unthinkable scale. You can ask, “If perfection is necessary for creation, then God must have created evil.” Evil isn’t something that was created by God; evil is what we do when we disobey God. And though God did create us with a free will, we chose to disobey Him anyway. So evil wasn’t created, but the ability to do so was, through us with our free will.
For my conclusion I will present this question, ask not if God exists, but why Man exists. We are flawed, sinful, hateful, and destructive. With all of our traits, according to the theories of evolutions, we should have never even come into existence. Someone or something wanted us to survive. With all our flaws, our mere presence shows that there is a loving God who is all-powerful and wants for us to not only exist but also love Him back. My point, God does exist; we see evidence of His work everyday, and His name is Yahweh, El Shaddai, Elohim, and other Hebrew words that describe His character. He is part of a tri-une God-head: Jesus Christ is His only begotten Son. Without Him there would be no existence of any kind, period. So I beg you to whether you are an atheist, agnostic, or theist, re-evaluate your beliefs and think about, for a moment, that if there is a God, what has He done for you, and if you come to the conclusion that there is no God, ask yourself, Why? I hope you will come to the same answer as I have: God Loves!
